Georgia Medical Insurance
The number of people in Georgia without medical insurance is steadily rising. The rate of increase is amongst the highest in the country according to recent Census Bureau information.
It is estimated that more than 1.7 million people in Georgia do not have medical insurance. This figure is up from 1.5 million in 2004. Georgia is one of only 8 US states where the uninsured figure rose during the period 2004-2005.
Some good news is that the Northeast Georgia Health System signed contracts with the 2 medical insurance companies that will be responsible for a new managed-care system for Medicaid in Northern Georgia. This effectively means that patients currently served by Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids must enroll in a managed-care plan from either WellCare of Georgia or Amerigroup Community Care.
Meanwhile concerned physicians, healthcare employees and patients from across Georgia gathered on the steps of the State Capitol to protest the abysmal under performance of Peach State Health Plan, Wellcare of Georgia and AmeriGroup Georgia Managed Care - the private HMOs that are implementing Georgia's Medicaid program. Doctors have filed a class-action lawsuit for millions of dollars of delinquent payments from these three companies.
More and more patients and doctors in Georgia realize the current healthcare system is broken and spinning out of control, leaving patients without medical insurance. Medical insurance companies should rise to the occasion and help find solutions. Whether the solution is a privatized healthcare system or an overhauled state-run system is not important - what is important is to have affordable medical insurance for every person in Georgia.
The current system holds no sense of security for either patient or medical provider. It seems especially true in Georgia, medical insurance through a private provider is the only worthwhile insurance to have - and even that is debatable.
There are just too many worthless insurance scams on the market. When choosing your Georgia medical insurance provider, do your homework and do it well.
